Aroostook Centre Mall Cuts Costs By Going Green

August (2009) When the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle determined that its energy technology was obsolete and more importantly, uneconomical, it looked to Mechanical Services to help.

The mall conducted an energy audit and found it was using an excessive amount of electricity to heat and air condition its vast retail space. One of the first solutions was to upgrade to a more efficient propane heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit — and recycle the old electric-fired 20-ton units.

It’s the first step to a greener mall says General Manager Patti Crook. See the full report from WAGM-TV 8.

“We’ve done projects with less than a year payback and a substantial amount of money. We’re talking sixty, seventy thousand dollars with a one year pay back on high efficiency combustion controls.”

Mechanical Services Employee Honored for Volunteer Work to Restore Liberty Ship

Portland, Maine (August 20, 2007) — Falmouth resident Mark McGill received two awards from the chairman of Project of Liberty Ship, Michael Schneider, on board the Liberty Ship S. S. John Brown last Friday evening. McGill received the awards in recognition of his hard work in making the ship’s visit to Portland a success. McGill volunteered more than 1,000 hours to help maintain the historic vessel, and in recognition McGill, who’s made several trips to Baltimore for his volunteer work, was aboard the ship when it arrived in Portland last week.

McGill is employed with Mechanical Services of Portland, who hosted a reception aboard the S.S. Brown last Friday evening for company employees, their families and over 20 shipyard veterans who worked on the Liberty Ships during WWII.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for us to observe an important part of our history, and to recognize the men and woman who built the Liberty Ships” remarked Mechanical Services President Chris Green. “We are proud to have Mark as an employee and applaud his commitment to the preservation of this ship.”

McGill’s interest in Liberty Ships grew from his father’s World War II stories. “Stepping on board and setting sail in June was an incredible achievement for all of us who love the Brown. We have become a family of sorts and are so honored to share this part of history with the world,” said McGill.
